Menstrual Products you’ve Probably Never Heard of

Okay, so you’re wondering what’s new in the world of menstrual products? Are there things that aren’t new, but you just haven’t heard of? Well, you’ve certainly come to the right place!

We’re going to share our Top 8 Menstrual Products you’ve maybe never heard of. They include:

  • The Ziggy Cup
  • Soft Tampons
  • Interlabial Pads
  • Sea Sponge Tampons
  • Instead Soft Cups
  • The Livia
  • The Looncup

We’ll assume that you know all about menstrual cups, reusable cloth pads, and disposable pads and tampons!

#1: The Ziggy Cup

Intimina Ziggy Cup – Extra-Thin Reusable Menstrual Cup with Flat-fit Design

If you want to have non-messy period sex, then you’ll need to check out the Ziggy Cup. It’s made by Intimina, the same company behind the Lily Cup, and Lily Cup One for Teens. We LOVE this new product and that’s why it takes top spot on our list of the menstrual products you’ve probably never heard of.

Unlike traditional menstrual cups which are firm, and sit low in the vaginal canal, the Ziggy Menstrual Cup is a flat, flexible disc that sits right below the cervix. That’s why it possible to use it during penetrative sex.

Most people report that neither they, nor their partner were able to feel the Ziggy Cup during penetrative sex.

—>See What People are Saying about the Ziggy Cup Here<—

The best thing about the Ziggy Menstrual Cup is that it’s made from medical grade silicone and is reusable. It has the same lifespan on a regular menstrual cup, which is around 5 years with proper care and cleaning.

You can easily get the Ziggy Cup over on Amazon:

#2: Soft Tampons

Joy Division Soft-Tampons Dry 10St.

List Price: $25.99
Price: $25.99

Next up on our list of the menstrual products you’ve probably never heard of are Soft Tampons. They are similar to regular tampons, except that they don’t have a string on them.

Inserting them is easy. You have to push them “up there.” Removal is a bit more difficult, but soft tampons do have a pull tab on them which makes it easier.

However, if you have a long vaginal canal/high cervix, or very short fingers, they may not be so easy. Soft tampons work for some people, but not for others.

The reason why you might try out a soft tampon is because it can be used for sex during your period. This is actually the main reason why you might use them. However, unlike the Ziggy Cup, soft tampons are a disposable product.

#3: Interlabial Pads

Okay, so if there is one menstrual product on the list that you have TRULY never heard of before, it’s probably this one. Interlabial pads are kind of a bizarre product that most people didn’t even think would be possible.

Basically, they are cloth petal-shaped pads that fit inside your labia. There are a few reasons why you might want to consider them:

  • You have an extremely heavy period and want an extra layer of protection.
  • They can prevent your menstrual fluid from “gushing” out of you.
  • If you lay on your back with your knees up, you can use interlabial petals to prevent the blood from coming out through your butt crack.

Other than that? There aren’t that many reasons to use intralabial petals. You can sew your own—check out these patterns on Pinterest. Or, there is one company that sells interlabial pads on Amazon:

#4: Sea Sponge Tampons

Next up on our list of menstrual products you’ve probably never heard of are sea sponge tampons. Like the Ziggy Cup, and Soft Tampons, they can be used for sex during your period. Most people report not being able to feel them during intercourse.

—>See what people are saying about Sea Sponge Tampons for Period Sex here<—

Like the Ziggy Cup, sea sponge tampons are reusable, but only for a period of 3-4 months.

In our experience, the Ziggy Menstrual Cup is better. Although a sea sponge tampon is easier to insert (and remove, sometimes), it’s not as good at preventing leaks. It’s also not that easy to keep sea sponge tampons clean and sanitary.

However, some people find them very comfortable, and are willing to replace them every couple of months. But, for period sex, there are better options.

For our money, we prefer the reusable option that’s easy to keep clean—the Ziggy Cup. Or, a disposable option (Soft Tampons, Soft Cups, Flex Discs) for sex during your period. Sea Sponge Tampons are kind of a hybrid between these two products that have a lot of disadvantages, but not a lot of advantages.

#5: Period Panties

Coming it at number five on our list of menstrual products you’ve probably never heard of are period panties. They can offer you an extra layer of protection during your period.

Some menstrual underwear absorb fluid, and are equivalent to a light tampon or menstrual pad. Others have a leakproof layer in them, so they don’t really absorb fluid, but they do prevent embarrassing leaks.

It’s recommended that you use menstrual panties with a menstrual cup, pad, or tampon.

Another reason beyond menstruation why you might consider period panties is if you have light incontinence. Period underwear can be a cheaper, healthier (free of toxic chemicals) and more comfortable option than wearing pantyliners or disposable pads all the time.

You can check out our favourite period panty brand, Anigan over on Amazon. There is a nice range of styles and colours:

#6: Instead Soft Cups

Softcup, 14 Disposable Menstrual Discs
Softcup, 14 Disposable Menstrual Discs
Price: $10.99

Next up on our list of period products that you’ve maybe never heard of are Instead Soft Cups. They are another option for non-messy sex during your period.

Soft Cups work in much the same way as the Ziggy Menstrual Cup. It’s a flat, flexible disc that sits right below your cervix.

Unlike the Ziggy Cup, Soft Cups are disposable. A nice option is to try out a box of these to see if they work for you. If yes, then consider buying the reusable Ziggy Menstrual Cup.

You might also see the Flex Menstrual Disc mentioned as an option for period sex. The Flex Disc and Soft Cup are made by the same company, Instead. They say that the Flex Menstrual Disc is an “updated” version of the Soft Cup.

In reality, they are very similar products. The main difference is how you can buy them. The Flex Disc is by subscription only, while the Soft Cup can be found in stores, or on Amazon.

#7: Livia, for Period Pain

If you experience menstrual cramps, then you may want to consider the Livia. It’s basically a TENS machine that you might find at the physiotherapist’s office. You put the pads on your abdomen, or back and then the frequency is designed to block the pain from cramps.

Does it work? Studies have shown that it does help to reduce pain from menstrual cramps. However, it doesn’t seem to work for everyone, according to the reviews on Amazon. It is a miracle for others though. You’ll have to try it out for yourself and see.

—>See What People are Saying about the Livia on Amazon<—

We think it’s an interesting, drug-free option for dealing with period pain. You can check it out for yourself over on Amazon:

#8: The Looncup

Here’s a menstrual product that you may perhaps have heard of, but can’t actually get.

The next big thing in the world of menstrual cups was supposed to be the Looncup. It’s basically like a “smart” menstrual cup that would allow you to track your period via an app on your Smartphone.

Cool, right? Lots of other people thought that too and they received $160,000 + in pledges in 2015/2016. The company promised a whole bunch of cool things about the Looncup:

  • It could automatically check your menstrual cycle
  • The Loon Cup could measure the colour and volume of your menstrual fluid
  • You could take back control of your period

The LOONCUP got a bunch of press and were features in a ton of big-name publications. But, as far as we can tell, none of the Kickstarter backers now have a Loon Cup in their hands, despite being promised one in January 2016.

It seems to mostly be a scam. Think sketchy communications, and a release date which keeps getting pushed back indefinitely. This is why you’ll probably never actually get this promising menstrual cup in your hands. It seems to not really exist.
