• Try a few different folds, some work better than others for soft menstrual cups
• Push the cup back, and down towards your tailbone. Do NOT push it up, towards the sky. This can make it quite difficult to get it to open because it’ll likely be in the position.
• Keep the softest menstrual cups low in the vaginal canal. This is where they’re designed to go, and there’s more room for them to fully open.
• Move the menstrual cup around a little bit. Side to side, up and down. This can sometimes get it to open.
• Twist the menstrual cup one full direction one way, then the other.
• Run your finger around the rim to feel for any obstructions.

Are Soft Menstrual Cups Good for Beginners?

A common question that people have is whether or not a very soft menstrual cup is good for a beginner. It’s a great question!

A lot of people who are new to menstrual cups make think, “The softer the better!” This is because they may think it’ll be more comfortable for them, and they won’t be able to feel it inside of them.

However, even for the firmer menstrual cups, you shouldn’t be able to feel it once it’s inside of you. All menstrual cups, are for the most part, very comfortable once you have them inside of you.

What does make a difference for a beginner is how easy the menstrual cup is to insert and remove.

We usually recommend that for your first menstrual cup, you stick with an “average/firm” cup. This is because inserting a very soft menstrual cup can be quite difficult. They don’t just pop open once you insert them, which can make it a bit difficult.

What about the Diva Cup: Is it a Soft Period Cup?

If there’s one menstrual cup that you may have heard of before, it’s the Diva Cup. It’s also the one that you’re most likely to be able to find in stores in your area. Along with the Lunette Cup, and the Mooncup, it’s the first modern-day menstrual cup that’s made from medical grade silicone.

But, is the Diva Cup considered to be one of the softer menstrual cups? Or, is a firm cup?

The Diva Cup is considered to have an average firmness. If you took a hundred menstrual cups and did “squish” tests on them, you’d probably find that the Diva Cup falls right in the middle.

It’s for this reason that many people choose the Diva Cup for their first menstrual cup. It’s not so stiff that it causes cramps, but it’s stiff enough that it’s easy to insert.

The size of the Diva Menstrual Cup is quite nice as well. The small is a bit below average, while the large is slightly above.

However, there are some people who find that the Diva Cup causes cramping for them. If this is the case, try switching to one of the soft period cups that we’ve mentioned on this list (Femmycycle, Sckooncup, or Super Jennie) and you’ll probably have a much better experience.

What about the Soft Cup? 

Okay, so the name may lead you to believe that the “Soft Cup” might be the softest menstrual cup. Don’t let this confuse you though!

The Soft Cup is actually not a reusable menstrual cup. It’s a disposable product that’s designed for one time use only. Although you may be tempted to wash, and reuse it, it’s not designed for this purpose and the company specifically recommends against this.

The Soft Cup does collect menstrual fluid, but it’s a flat, flexible disc that fits below your cervix. The reason that you might want to consider the Instead Soft Cup is because it’s suitable for penetrative sex, unlike the other menstrual cups on this list.

It is indeed very soft, but you shouldn’t compare it to regular menstrual cups in terms of firmness. It’s kind of like an apples to oranges thing. They’re all “cups” but they are very different in terms of both design and usability.
