Let’s Find out the Details you need to Know

Did you know that the idea of a menstrual cup has been around since the 1930’s? However, it wasn’t implemented until the 50’s. When women tried this idea, they didn’t like it because it was too hard and heavy. After years and years of upgrades, the menstrual cup is now more mainstream than ever.

When women tried this idea, they didn’t like it because the material was too hard and they didn’t know how to clean a menstrual cup. After years and years of upgrades, the menstrual cup is now more mainstream than ever.

Although the menstrual cup is more popular now, there are still plenty of women who either have never heard of it or they think it is unhygienic to use.

That is why we are going to teach you how to clean and maintain the menstrual cup properly so that there are no more sanitary concerns.

How Often Should I Empty My Cup?

Menstrual cups should be emptied 2-3 times a day. However, if you are new to using a menstrual cup, you should empty it out more often so that you may determine how well the cup works with your menstrual flow.

There are many types of menstrual cups that all hold a different amount of liquids.

For example, most cups will hold 1 fluid ounce (30ml) since women will lose, on average, 80 ml of blood during the entire cycle. This means that this cup can usually stay in for 10-12 hours with no problem.

Heavier periods require more maintenance due to the increased flow.

Now that we have the basics, let’s discuss how to properly clean one.

How To Clean It

To maintain a clean menstrual cup, all you have to do is rinse it during uses with soap and water. The soap should be fragrance-free since you will be reinserting it.

If you are using a public restroom that doesn’t have a sink in there with you, you may use a paper towel or you can start carrying wipes to more effectively clean the cup. Once you get home you can take it back out and clean it properly to make sure the cup doesn’t have anything stuck in there.

Some people prefer a menstrual cup cleaner, such as these. There is no right answer for this, it just becomes a case of personal preference.

Once you are completely finished with your cycle, you should put your cup in boiling water to disinfect it since you won’t be using it for another 20 or so days. Simply stick the cup in boiling water and leave it in for 5-10 minutes. Make sure there is plenty of water in the pan so that it doesn’t evaporate.

When you are finished with the cup, place it and a secure area where the moisture can evaporate off of the cup. Once your cycle restarts, clean it with soap and water again just to be sure.
