If you want to have penetrative sex during your period, you don’t have a lot of great options. However, there are a few that you should be aware of. Most people use sea sponge tampons, Instead Soft Cups, Flex Menstrual Discs, or the Ziggy Cup.

Regular Menstrual Cups

Regular menstrual cups like the Lena Cup, or the Diva Cup won’t work because they are too firm. And there just isn’t room for everything “up there.”

Technically, Sea Sponge Tampons are designed for multiples uses. However, sea sponge tampons are often a bit hard to keep clean and hygienic, which is their major negative

The Ziggy Cup is a nice option, but it’s a very new addition to the menstrual cup world (2018), and recent reviews show that it’s pretty hard to insert and remove for some people.

A Number of Advantages

Soft-Tampons are a nice option to have for sex during your period. While they are disposable, they are very easy to insert and remove. This is particularly true if you have a low to medium height cervix.

You just put them in, and then take them out when you’re done. There isn’t a steep learning curve, like with Soft Cups or Flex Discs. For these products, you have to put them right up under your cervix, which isn’t that easy for some people.

They are designed to sit in the same place as regular tampons, low in your vaginal canal. However, if you have penetrative sex while using one, it’ll probably move further up towards your cervix. You may find it a bit more difficult to remove if this happens.

Softtampons: One Small Disadvantage

If you have a very long vaginal canal, you may not love to use a Soft Tampon. You have to reach ALL the way up “in there” to get a Soft Tampon out. Remember, there is no string to assist you with this.

However, there is a pull tab, and most people find that that, along with using the muscles in their pelvis to push it out is enough. You can also get a trusted partner (the person you just had sex with?!) to assist you with removal.

In reality, some people find it super easy to remove Softtampons, while others find it very difficult. It kind of just depends on you, but you can’t necessarily tell what the case may be for you before you try them out.

How to Use Soft Tampons

There are a few simple steps you can follow for how to use them:

• Wash your hands well before handling a menstrual cup, tampon, or soft tampon. This can help to prevent things like yeast infections or bacterial vaginosis.
• Remove the film from the Softtampon.
• To make it easier to insert, you can get it damp with plain water, or a bit of lubricant. Be sure to squeeze out the excess so that it’ll absorb as much menstrual fluid as possible.
• Hold the tampon in your fingers and squeeze it together. It’ll look like an arrow with a slim tip. The underside has a groove where you can place your fingers to push the tampon into position.
• Open your labia with the other hand and push the tampon into your vagina until it’s fully inserted. There’s no need to push it right up below your cervix.
• When you want to remove it, pull it out by the strap.

I Can’t Get my Soft Tampon Out!

Okay, so it’s a problem, but you don’t need to panic about this. There are a few different ways to get your Softtampon out if you can’t reach the strap.

If you can’t reach it, try squatting down because this reduces the depth of the vaginal canal.

You could also try pushing down with the muscles in your pelvic and reaching up with your fingers.

Finally, you could try getting the Soft Tampon wetter. The company recommends a douche, but this actually belongs on our list of the Top 5 Things to Never Put Into your Vagina. You’ll have the same results with some water, minus all the chemicals that can throw off the pH balance of your vagina.

How Long Can I Wear Them?

The company recommends changing out your Softtampons every 3-8 hours, depending on your flow.

And, in order to reduce your chance of infection, you should replace it after swimming or sexual intercourse.

Are Soft-Tampons Better than Regular Tampons?

Let’s compare soft tampons to regular tampons. By “regular” tampons, we mean ones that have a string on them. They can have an applicator (Tampax for example), or not (OB).

As for which one is better, it really depends on your purpose. If you want to have sex during your period, a tampon with a string on it doesn’t really work that well. In this case, they are a far better option.

However, for regular use, stick with normal tampons that have a string on them. They have a few advantages, but the two main ones are as follows:

• Regular tampons are far, far easier to remove. You just pull the string out, instead of having to reach up into your vagina to find a Soft Tampon.
• Normal tampons are cheaper in most cases.

Do Soft Tampons Work for Period Sex?

Okay, so you want to have mess-free period sex during your period? Do they work? Most people find that they do.

If you take a look at customer reviews over on Amazon, you’ll see that most people have pretty positive experiences with this product.

In most cases, neither party can feel them during sexual intercourse. They’re also reasonably easy to insert correctly, although slightly less easy to remove.

What about Cutting the String off Regular Tampons?

One thing you might consider for sex during your period is cutting the string off of regular tampons. However, we don’t recommend this. Normal tampons have a shape that is long and thin, and not conducive to penetrative sex. Both people involved would likely find it a bit uncomfortable.

Can I Reuse Joy Division Soft Tampons?

Soft Tampons certainly aren’t cheap! That’s why you may want to know whether or not you can reuse them.

In general, it’s NEVER recommended that you reuse a single use feminine hygiene product. The main reason for this is the risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome.

Unless you can clean it very well (like you can with a menstrual cup), you should never reuse something that’s inserted into your vagina. That’s because it can contain all kinds of bacteria on it from the previous time, which can increase rapidly and potentially cause some serious problems.

Just avoid this and use a fresh Soft Tampon every single time. It’s just not worth it when you consider the risk of TSS. It’s a serious, sometimes deadly problem that can happen when you insert something into your body.

Companies that make single use products recommend that you NEVER reuse their products because it’s serious stuff!

What about Soft-Tampons and Toxic Shock Syndrome?

A common question that people have is whether or not there’s a risk of TSS with Soft Tampons, and is that risk higher or lower than with tampons.

Let’s talk numbers. There are far, far more tampon users than Soft-Tampon users. This is why there are far more reported cases of TSS with traditional tampons than just about anything else.

As far as we can tell, there are no reported cases of TSS from using Softtampons. That said, it is indeed possible. Just because it hasn’t happened yet doesn’t mean that it won’t in the future.

Some Basic Precautions to Lower your Risk

There are a few basic precautions you should take to lower your risk:

• Wash your hands well before handling a Soft Tampons, inserting or removing it.
• Soft-Tampons are designed as a single-use product. DO NOT wash them and use them again.
• Be sure to change our your Soft-Tampon frequently. 8 hours is probably the maximum amount of time you’d want to leave it in. Changing it more frequently will lower your risk.
• You’ll want to take out your Softtampons after having sex with it in.

It’s easy to forget you’re wearing something like a Softtampon at the end of your period. Be sure to not forget to remove it. If you notice a foul-smelling odour, or strangely coloured discharge, this should be one of the first things you suspect.

Can I use Softtampons with an IUD?

A common question that people have is whether or not they can use various types of feminine hygiene products with an IUD.

In general, something will be compatible with an IUD as long as it sits low in the vaginal canal. There should be space between the products and the cervix, which the strings from the IUD hang out.

Because Soft Tampons sit low in the vaginal canal, most people should find that they work well with an IUD. Of course, consult with your doctor for the best advice specific to your situation.

I Have an Extremely Low Cervix: Will Softtampons Work for Me?

Can you Have Sex with a Tampon In?

A common question that people have is whether or not they can have sex while using a regular tampon. By “regular,” we’re referring to ones that have strings on them and are kind of like long cylinders.

The easy answer is, “No!” Tampons with strings are not designed for this purpose. During penetrative sex, the guy’s penis will keep pushing the tampon further up the vaginal canal and will likely cause some discomfort when it’s being jammed into the cervix.

It can also make the tampon pretty difficult to remove if the string gets pushed all the way into the cervix.

In addition, the string will certainly get in the way, either pulling or pushing the tampon around and it won’t be a pleasant experience for you.

Most people report that neither they, nor their partner were able to feel Softcups during sex. The negatives of Instead Soft Cups are much the same as Softtampons.

In reality, the Flex Disc is very similar to the Soft Cup. The main difference is in how you can get them.

The Flex Disc is available by subscription only, while the Soft Cup can be found in drugstores on or Amazon.

The Ziggy Cup

Perhaps our favourite option for period sex is the Ziggy Cup. The company behind the product, Intimina also makes the Lily Cup, Lily Cup Compact, and Lily Cup One for Teens.

In design and function, it’s very similar to the Instead Soft Cup or Flex Disc. It fits right below your cervix, and can be used during penetrative sex.

The main reason you might want to consider the Ziggy Cup over either of these options, or Soft Tampons is that it’s reusable. The Ziggy Cup is made from medical grade silicone and can last for a similar amount of time as a regular menstrual cup (5+ years with proper care and cleaning).

The main negative to them is that they are a bit difficult to keep clean. Please follow the instructions carefully, and be sure to rinse off any cleaning agents well so that you don’t alter the pH balance of your vagina with these things. This can lead to an increase in vaginal infections like bacterial vaginosis or a yeast infection.

The product we’ve been reviewing up until this point is made by the “Joy Division” company. They make by far the most popular soft tampons without a string on the market today.

However, there is another product from the Gynotex company called “Dry Sponge Tampons.”

In terms of design and use, they are quite similar to Joy Division Softtampons except that they don’t have a pull tab on them. Basically, Gynotex Dry Sponges look kind of like a small foam cylinder.

Main Use for Gynotex Comfort Dry Tampons

The main use for them would be period sex. They are better than regular tampons because there are no strings hanging out. And they are obviously much better than the regular menstrual cups which sit low in your vaginal canal.

For regular use, they are very expensive and currently cost more than $1 per piece. The company recommends changing them every 4-6 hours, so it could be $5+ per day if used as your sole source of period protection.

In the 1970’s, one company came out with a super-absorbent tampon made largely from this material. The cases of TSS started to rise, and eventually, the company pulled it off the shelves.

Just say no to a cosmetic sponge during your period, for sex, or otherwise. You should never put things into your vagina that weren’t designed for this purpose.
