• When it’s inserted correctly, you should not be able to feel it. If you can, try reinserting it. It should be right under your cervix, and will rest behind the pubic bone.
• To test if it’s in the correct position, use your finger to check if your cervix can be felt through the silicone.

Ziggy Cup: Highest Capacity Menstrual Cup

At 76 ml, the Ziggy Cup has the highest capacity of any reusable feminine hygiene product on the market today. There are some high-capacity menstrual cups (the Super Jennie or Anigan EvaCup for example) that hold around 40 ml.

Compare this to a jumbo tampon that holds 10 m. These high capacity cups that hold 40 ml will enable you to deal with your period 4x less. If you have to change a tampon every 2 hours, you may be able to go for 8.

However, the Ziggy Menstrual Cup? You may be able to go for 12 hours, even when you have a heavy flow. You may be tempted to go even longer, but the company recommends changing it after this duration of time.

Even though the capacity of the Intimina Ziggy Cup is very high, you’ll want to take it out and clean it out at least 2x a day. This is to lower your risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome.

Can it Really Hold 76 ml?

Okay, so even if you were to try using the Ziggy Cup for a ridiculous amount of time and filling it up completely, will it actually hold 76 ml of fluid? That’s a great question.

It does, kind of. When it’s actually inside of you, it can hold a lot of menstrual fluid. And as long as it’s in the correct position, it doesn’t leak for most people.

However, the problem is taking it out when it’s that’s full. It’s not easy to take it out without spilling fluid even after wearing it only for a few hours and with it less than half full. At capacity? It’s almost impossible.

Can I Wear the Ziggy Cup at Night?

You’re probably used to the warning to only wear tampons for 8 hours because of the risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome. What about menstrual cups? Can you wear them overnight?

Most menstrual cups companies recommend using a cup for a maximum of 12 hours. At that point, you have to take the cup out, wash it well using soap or menstrual cup wash and then reinsert it.

This is also done to reduce your risk of TSS. Bacteria can grow on a menstrual cup, so it’s good to wash it every so often.

Of course, if you have a heavy flow, you may have to empty it sooner. Although the Ziggy Menstrual Cup does have a very high capacity, you may also want to empty it a bit sooner than that because it’ll be easier to not spill when taking it out.

Insert your index finger into your vagina. If you…

• Can touch your cervix easily with the tip of your finger, you have a low cervix

Ziggy Cup vs. Flex Disc

A common question people have about the Ziggy Cup is how it compares to the Flex Disc. The answers from the previous section about the Soft Cups are the exact same.

The Softcups and the Flex are both made by the same company, but the Flex is a bit newer in terms of materials. However, both products work in the same way, and the design is almost identical.

The easy answer is no! If you’re trying to prevent pregnancy or STI’s, then you’ll need to take some precautions, for example, condoms. Consult with your doctor to find the option that will work best for you.

Think about it this way. The Ziggy Cup is designed to prevent fluid from escaping out of your vaginal canal. During sex, if you don’t want to get pregnant, you want the opposite to happen—sperm to not reach your cervix. It’s best to use a product designed to do this.

How to Have Sex on your Period

If you want to have sex while on your period, there are a few good, and some quite bad options. The worst options are to use a regular tampon or menstrual cup. They’ll be be pretty uncomfortable.

You could also get it on, on top of some old towels or a dedicated moisture proof blanket. The menstrual fluid is a nice, natural lubricant and it’ll usually feel great.

Ziggy Cup with an IUD?

A common question about the Ziggy Cup is whether or not you can use it with an IUD. In general, it’s not recommended.

IUD’s and menstrual cups like the Diva Cup can usually work together because these cups sit very low in the vaginal canal, while the strings for your IUD are further up, right below your cervix. The key is having a gap between your strings, and the menstrual cup.

However, the Ziggy Cup sits right below your cervix, in the same area as the strings from your IUD. This is why we don’t recommend it. There’s just too many possibilities to accidentally dislodge your IUD while you’re inserting, or especially removing it.

Of course, we’re not medical professionals so please consult with your doctor about this matter.

Intimina Ziggy Cup and Yeast Infections

In general, most people find that they get fewer yeast infections (or the opposite problem, bacterial vaginosis) when making the switch from tampons to a menstrual cup. There are a couple of reasons for this:

• Non-organic tampons often contain trace amounts of pesticides and other toxic chemicals that aren’t great for your vaginal health.
• Tampons leave micro-fibers behind, which can be irritating to some people.
• Tampons absorb, rather than collect fluid like menstrual cup. This throws off the natural lubrication in the vagina, which can cause yeast infections, or BV for some people.

However, if you’re made the switch to the Ziggy Menstrual Cup and have found that you’re getting more yeast infections of case of Bacterial Vaginosis, then there are a couple of things you can try.

• Make sure to clean it well. Every time you remove it, be sure to wash it well with mild soap or menstrual cup wash and water. Rinse off any residue extremely well.
• Boil your Intimina Ziggy Cup for 5 minutes at the end of your cycle to sterilize it.

Can I Get Toxic Shock Syndrome from the Ziggy Menstrual Cup?

You’re probably used to changing out your tampon every 8 hours because of the risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome. Is there a risk of TSS from the Ziggy Cup, and is that risk higher, or lower than with a tampon?

Let’s find out! Every year, there are hundreds of cases of Toxic Shock Syndrome caused by tampons. There are also millions of tampon users around the world, so the overall risk is actually very low. This is especially true if you take basic precautions like changing your tampon frequently enough.

To date, there is only one reported case of TSS from using a menstrual cup (the Diva Cup). The risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome from a menstrual cup is very low, especially if you change empty it frequently enough (12 hours max), wash your hands before inserting or removing it, and also keep the cup very clean.

How to Clean the Ziggy Lelo Menstrual Cup

The company recommends cleaning your Ziggy Cup each time you remove it with mild soap and water. Doing this will help to prevent things like yeast infections, BV, or Toxic Shock Syndrome. Just be sure to wash off the soap residue well before putting your Ziggy Cup back in.

You could also use a special menstrual cup wash. These are specially designed with natural ingredients and are designed to keep your period cup in tip-top shape and smelling nice.

At the end of your cycle, you can boil your cup in pot of water on the stove for 5-8 minutes. Be sure to keep an eye on things to prevent your Ziggy Menstrual Cup from sticking to the sides of the pot, or the pot boiling dry. Many a cup has been ruined this way!

Finally, be sure to avoid the following:

• harsh cleaners
• petroleum-based substances
• tea-tree oil, alcohol
• bleach

These will reduce the lifespan of your menstrual cup. You should replace your cup every 2 years, but many people use medical grade silicone cups for longer than that. The company says to replace it if you notice any cuts or punctures, or an oily, sticky film on it.

My Intimina Ziggy Cup Smells Bad!

In general, menstrual cups shouldn’t really smell bad if you clean them regularly. If they do, there are three possible reasons.

Firstly, the problem may not be with your Ziggy Cup. The smell may be because of a vaginal infection of some kind. Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is a likely culprit (yeast infections usually don’t smell bad) and will have an odour of fish.

The next problem may be that you’re not cleaning your menstrual cup well enough. Be sure to use a mild soap or menstrual cup wash every time you remove your cup.

At the end of your period, get an old toothbrush and scrub all those nooks and crannies well. You should also boil your cup in a pot of water on the stove for around 5 minutes to sterilize it.

Finally, be sure NOT to store your Ziggy Cup in an airtight container. This breeds bacteria and can lead to a cup that smells really bad. Use the cloth bag that came with it, and keep it in a place with some good airflow.

Some people just use soap and water to clean their Ziggy Cup. The key is to use a mild soap to not damage your cup. Other people use a menstrual cup wash.

In reality, the choice is yours. In terms of safety, and lifespan or your period cup, there isn’t a whole lot of difference between the two.

Can I Pee While Wearing the Ziggy Menstrual Cup?

A question that people have is whether or not they can pee (or poop) while using a menstrual cup, including the Intimina Ziggy Cup. The good news is that it’s entirely possible! It’d be a huge hassle if you had to empty your cup every single time you had to pee!

Let’s talk anatomy for a minute. “Down there,” you have three things to consider:

• Urethra (pee)
• Anus (poop)
• Vagina (menstrual fluid)

In theory, using a menstrual cup in your vaginal canal shouldn’t interfere with either your urethra or anus.

Feel Crappy During your Period?

Let’s be real, having your period is not fun. This is especially true if you get terrible menstrual cramps, or have a really heavy period. There are however, a few things you can do to help yourself feel a little bit better. They include:

• Exercise (gentle!)
• Get lots of sleep
• Eat healthy food and drink lots of water
• Heat for menstrual cramps

Can the Ziggy Cup Help me Get Pregnant?

There are lots of reports of people using Softcups to help get pregnant. What about the Ziggy Cup?

Because they’re such similar products, you could definitely use them the Ziggy Cup for this purpose as well. The major difference between the two is that the Ziggy is reusable, while the Soft Cup is not.

There are two main methods. The first is that you have intercourse as you normally would. And then without getting up, you insert the Ziggy Cup. Some people get up and go about their day, while others lay in bed with their legs up for a period of time.

The second method is that your partner ejaculates into the Ziggy. Then you insert it and can either go about your day, or lay down for a while.

Keep in mind that it must be taken out every 12 hours for whatever method you choose.

As fas as the science behind this, there is none. So don’t take this as an official guide for how to get pregnant. However, the theory behind it is sound. If you can keep all that sperm up there for longer with the Ziggy Cup, then why not?

Can I get Cramps from the Ziggy Menstrual Cup?

Most people find menstrual cups, including this one very comfortable. You shouldn’t actually be able to feel the cup when it’s inside you.

If you can feel it, your period cup is probably inserted incorrectly. Or, you have a cup that is too big for you.

In the case of the Ziggy Cup, there’s only one size, and it should work for the vast majority of people. As long as it’s inserted in the correct way, there should be no problems with cramping.

It’s soft, flexible and while it pushes against your vaginal canals, it shouldn’t be strong enough to cause cramping. If it does, something is not right.

Take it and try another form of period protection. You could give it another go in a day or two, or next cycle, but if you still get cramps, you may be the small minority of people that the Ziggy Cup does not work for.
