Cloth Pantyliners vs Disposable Pantyliners Introduction

There are two basic options for pantyliners: reusable cloth, or disposables. Cloth pantyliners have a number of advantages, including the following:

  • Great for the environment
  • Save money over the long-term
  • Free from toxic chemicals

However, you do have to take care of them. The good news is that is reasonably easy to do. You can just throw washable pantyliners in the wash with your regular laundry.

What about Disposables?

Disposable pantyliners are not environmentally friendly, and are more expensive. Some brands of non-organic panty liners contain trace amounts of toxins in them.

They are however, very easy to deal with because you just throw them in the trash when you’re done. This is the main reason why people use disposable panty liners.

Disposable vs Cloth Pantyliners

Cloth Pantyliners Introduction

If you’re looking to green up your period, then you’ll want to consider making the switch to reusable panty liners. They are made from a variety of fabrics, including cotton, bamboo, fleece and a variety of other natural materials.

Most of them contain a leakproof layer for added protection. Unlike disposable panty liners, they don’t have a sticky backing. However, they stay in place with snaps on the wings.

They do cost more up-front, but over the long-term, you can potentially save lots of money.

Are they comfortable to wear? Most people find that they hardly notice when they’re wearing them. Most of them are very thin, and reasonably breathable. But, keep in mind they don’t have a dry-weave on them like disposable ones so they are not as good at wicking away moisture from your skin.

The new ones in particular that have a waterproof layer in the middle stay in place on your underwear really well and don’t slide around. You put them in place, secure them with snaps and you’re good to go. They also come in a variety of cute designs.

Disposable Pantyliners Introduction

organic-pantyliners-vs-cloth-pantyliners

Organic Pantyliners

Disposable pantyliners are what the majority of people use. They’re easy to find in stores, and are very convenient. Most people find that the absorbency is a bit better than with fabric panty liners.

However, the non-organic ones sometimes contain trace amounts of toxic chemicals in them. They come from the pesticides used to grow the cotton, as well as from the manufacturing process. Exposure to this stuff isn’t good for your health, and the long-term effects aren’t really well known.

A big part of the problem is that companies aren’t required to disclose this information about what’s in their products. In the USA for example, these feminine hygiene products are classified as “medical devices,” which is how companies get around it.

What about Organic Panty Liners?

You can, of course get organic pantyliners if you want to reduce your exposure to toxic chemicals during your period. As an added bonus, the vast majority of these products are plastic-free, if you’re looking to green up your period.

They are more expensive however, and sometimes difficult to find at your local store.

In our experience, the best place to find them is online. Prices are cheaper and you’ll also have a wide selection of options. You can check out some of our top picks here: The Best Organic Panty Liners.

Or, you can check out this handy comparison chart below with our top choices if you want to go organic:

Why Use Pantyliners?

People use disposable pantyliners and reusable pads for a number of reasons, including the following:

  • Light incontinence
  • As backup for a menstrual cup
  • To take care of vaginal discharge
  • Spotting before, or between periods

Can I Wear Panty Liners Every Day?

If you suffer from one or more of these problems, you may be tempted to wear panty liner every single day. Is this okay? Safety-wise, it may not be a concern, especially if you use cloth or organic. The type doesn’t really matter with regards to this question.

However, these things can lead to an increase in vaginal infections, like bacterial vaginosis of a yeast infection. You want to let them area get some air-flow to it and to keep it dry, and pantyliners do the opposite of them. They keep warm moisture next to the skin, which is ideal breeding ground for yeast and bacteria.

Our advice (and that of your doctor as well most likely) would be to treat the underlying condition so you don’t have to use panty-liners every day. If you have excessive vaginal discharge, for example, there is likely treatment. Or, same with spotting outside your period, or incontinence.

Cloth Pantyliners vs Disposable Pantyliners: The Takeaway

We almost always prefer cloth pantyliners over disposables. They’re just so much better for the environment, our health, and our bank account balance.

Cloth menstrual pads and pantyliners for the win!

Aren’t Reusable Liners a Hassle?

You may think that taking care of and cleaning them might be a hassle. Try them out. It’s really not, if you don’t care about staining. Most women just throw reusable cloth panty liners in with their regular laundry. You can pre-soak them to prevent them from staining as well.

If you don’t care about the blood, then just clean them in cold water as you would any pair of underwear for example. It really is that easy.

What About Traveling with Reusable Pads?

Just about the only time when disposable pantyliners win are when you’re traveling. At home, you can throw soiled pads into your laundry hamper. If you’re away for the day, you can bring a wet bag to store soiled pads in.

But when traveling and you don’t have access to laundry facilities? Stored soiled pantyliners is not ideal. In this case, use disposables.
