Pee Funnels (aka Female Urination Device, FUD, Female urinal, female pee cup) allow women or trans people to pee while standing up.

There are a few different types of pee funnels you might want to consider if you’ve always thought that you wanted to pee while standing up:

• For outdoor activities. For example, backpacking, cycling, mountaineering, or boating. There are a number of advantages to peeing while standing up, especially in cold weather where you don’t have to pull down your pants fully.
• For jobs where there are no bathrooms. For example, road crews may have to pee next to a tree. If there isn’t a lot of cover, it can be hard for women to do this discreetly. The solution? Pee like a guy while standing up!

There are lots of tips for women who want to pee while standing up to make their experience better. Some of these include:

• Many people find that a wide stance is often best for not peeing on shoes and pants.
• Two hands often works better than one if you use a funnel type device.
• Practice in the shower first a few times before taking it out on the road. Trust us on this one. Most of these things have a pretty steep learning curve.
• Don’t pee into the wind for obvious reasons!
• You have to commit to it. Half-way tentative pees often end up in disaster.

Question #4: Reusable vs. Disposable Pee FUDs—Which ones are Best?

There are two main types of FUDs: reusable and disposable. In general, we love the reusable option of just about anything here at Reusable Menstrual Cups.

Reusables are eco-friendly, and also cheaper over the medium to long-term. In terms of overall quality for this product, the reusable ones are well designed and seem to work better than the disposables for most people.

Disposable pee funnels are usually made from waxy cardboard. They are stiff enough that it’s fine to use them for a single use, but they’d get soggy if you tried to use them more than that (it’s gross too!).

You might want to try a disposable female urination device if you’re on the fence about this product. Get a pack of 3 or 5 and give it a go in the shower. If it works, then consider getting a reusable one.

Question #6: Do I Have to Pull Down my Pants to use an FUD?

You may be wondering if you have to pull down your pants to use one of the female urination devices. It’s an excellent question, because if you don’t, it’s a big reason why you might want to consider one of these products.

It really depends on what type of FUD you decide to buy. The ones that are funnel shaped, without a tube that you can easily direct will usually require you to pull down your pants and underwear.

The funnels that have a tube you can direct are better, and you may only have to pull down your pants/underwear partly, or push them to the side.

Question #11: Which Pee Funnel do you Recommend for Long-Distance Backpacking?

So you’re considering thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail, or the Pacific Crest Trail and want to know which pee funnel is best for your situation?

Space is limited in your backpack, and you wan to avoid adding even a single ounce to your base weight if you don’t have to.

I’ve been there (the author of this article thru-hiked the AT in 2004!). The lightest, smallest pee funnel that you might want to consider is the Pibella.

Instead of having a big funnel area that takes up space and adds weight, it’s a thin tube that you put around your urethra. It’s super discreet, and people who see it may not even know what it is. It’s also very durable. Stuff it in your backpack and don’t have a second thought about it.

Of all the FUD’s out there, the Pibella female pee cup is probably has the biggest learning curve to it. That’s why we STRONGLY recommend practicing in the shower before you go on your thru-hike. It might be a small miracle if you don’t pee on yourself the first time!

Question #12: In there Another Lightweight Pee Funnel?

Okay, I hear you. The Pibella female pee cup is certainly a bit intimidation. The hole at the end of the funnel is quite small, and you need to position it perfectly or it won’t work.

If you’re looking for a female urination device that is still light in weight, but is a bit more forgiving, then you should check out the SheWee. It’a a bit of a hybrid pee funnel. It’s not a huge funnel like most of the other cups, but it’s also a bit more form-fitting than the Pibella.

The optional tube is perfect if you’re using it in a situation where weight and space isn’t an issue. For example, when you’re on a road trip. If you care about this, leave the extender tube at home and the tube works by itself well enough. By “well,” I mean that you won’t get pee all over your clothes or shoes!

Question #13: Is there a Pee Funnel for Rock Climbing?

When you’re rock climbing, the last thing you want to do is remove your harness. Sometimes this is actually not even an option, depending on where you’re at in your climb. It can be extremely useful to be able to pee like a guy.

The question is, “What the best female urination device for female rock climbers?” We recommend checking out the Pstyle pee funnel. Of all the ones we’ve used, this is the easiest to use with your clothes fully intact, by just pushing your underwear to one side.

You can slide the pStyle easily into a small space such as your climbing harness. It also creates a nice seal to your body so you can have some security that you won’t end up with pee all over your clothes.

The major negative to the pStyle is that’s a bit bigger than some of the simple tube devices we’ve already mentioned. It’s also pretty obvious what it is, so if you’re camping with a group of people, it won’t be that easy to use it without every single person figuring out what you’re doing!

Question #14: Are Pee Funnels only for Women?

No! There are plenty of transgender people who might feel more comfortable peeing while standing up. This is another major use of urination devices, so if you’re in this situation, be assured—lots of other people are doing it too.

Question #15: Can I use Female Urination Devices for Post-Surgery?

If you have foot, knee, ankle, or hip surgery, you may find it pretty difficult to sit down on the toilet. Perhaps you’re not able to bend your knees that well, so you stop drinking water to avoid the pain.

This isn’t a good plan. A better plan is to just get a female urination device which will allow you to pee while standing up into the toilet. Trust us. If you have knee surgery, you’re going to want one of these things!
