How did you Choose the Best Cups for 2021?

That’s an excellent question and we’re happy that you asked. We have a process that we follow for this kind of thing that involves:

  • We scoured the reviews on Amazon, looking at overall ratings, number of reviewers, and then looked carefully at the 3-4 star ones. They often give the most accurate picture of a particular item’s pros and cons.
  • We also looked at what other bloggers and YouTubers were saying about a certain product.
  • After that, we scoured the company websites to see what we could uncover—there’s often lots of helpful stuff about materials, manufacturing, company philosophy, etc.
  • Next, we got the actual products in our hands and tried them out. Were they easy to insert and remove? Did they leak? Etc. We paid for some of them, while we got some for free. However we get them, it doesn’t impact our review.
  • Finally, we came up with this list for you to choose from.

Best Menstrual Cups: Top 5 Options

Let’s get into the best menstrual cup options. Keep on reading for all the details you need to know.

#1: The Lena Cup

If you’re looking for the top menstrual cup to consider, look no further than the Lena Cup. It’s made in the USA and the vast majority of people who try it seem to love it.

There are more than 5000 4 + 5 star reviews on Amazon and excellent user ratings.

We love the two firmness options: regular, and sensitive. The regular option is slightly firmer than average and can make a nice choice if you’re new to period cups since it”ll be very easy to open. It’s also a nice option for the fitness buffs out there who may want a slightly stiffer cup.

The Sensitive which is a bit softer than average makes a great choice if you have a sensitive bladder, or find the stiffer cups are uncomfortable and cause cramps because they push too strongly against your vaginal walls. You’ll find that the fit of this one is very comfortable.

What People are Saying about it

“The Lena Cup is amazing and has far exceeded my expectations. I only wonder why I didn’t try it sooner! I’ve had three kids, so I use the large one and find that it works very well for me.”

“I’ve been a long-time cup user and have used the Diva Cup and the Lunette before. I decided to give the Lena Sensitive (the softer one) a try after finding these ones a bit uncomfortable. I LOVE it and have recommended it to all my friends. It’s comfortable, easy to insert and remove and exactly what I was looking for in a cup. Best of all, it doesn’t leak.”

“Menstruation just somehow isn’t as terrible now as it used to be.”

The Lunette Cup is one of the original menstrual cups made from medical grade silicone that came onto the market in the early 2000’s (along with the Diva Cup and Mooncup). It’s remained one of the most popular cups in the world since that time, and for good reason—it’s a top-quality product from Finland that many people seem to love.

This makes it one of our top picks.

Like the Lena Cup, it has thousands of very happy customers as judged by user ratings on Amazon. It has an excellent overall rating and many people mention how soft and comfortable it is. But, is it the right fit for you? It works for a lot of people!

Expensive, but Worth it

Although it’s one of the more expensive cups, it’s worth it for most people. It’s made from the highest quality silicone and should last you for years. This makes it a far cheaper option than pads or tampons over the medium to long-term.

What People are Saying about it

—>See Customer Ratings and Reviews Here<—

“The Lunette Cup is the first menstrual cup that I’ve tried so I was a little bit worried about inserting and removing it. I just followed the instructions though and found it very easy. Somewhat surprisingly, it didn’t seem to leak at all, unless I waited too long to empty it when my flow was heavy. I love how lazy I can be now—most times I can go 8-12 hours without emptying it!”

“I did a bunch of research about menstrual cups and found that many people mentioned that the Lunette is a bit more flexible and softer than the Diva Cup. I’m very happy with my purchase and am so, so, so happy to get rid of pads and tampons for the rest of my life!”

“I didn’t realize it would be so easy to insert into my vagina and get it to not leak. Seriously, I was a bit terrified by it, but it’s not that bad. Most days, I barely remember that it’s in there.”

The Sckoon Cup is one of the newer menstrual cups, but it’s quickly becoming very popular due to how comfortable it is. It’s one of the softer cups, and many people consider this one after finding something like the Diva Cup too stiff and even causing cramps in some cases.

Although softer period cups can be a bit more difficult to insert because they don’t pop open so easily after you insert them into your vagina, this doesn’t seem to be the case with this one. Although soft, most people have no problems with inserting it and getting it to not leak.

Made from 1 Piece of Silicone

One unique thing about the SkoonCup is that it’s made from a single piece of silicone instead of 2-3 pieces that are molded together. This lack of seams makes it both more comfortable, as well as easier to clean. And many women find that the shape of it works better for them than some of the older cups.

Just about the only negative is that the capacity of the small is slightly lower than average at 23 ml. This makes it not the best choice if you have a particularly heavy flow. However, it’s also slightly shorter than average and could make a good option if you have a low-medium cervix height.

What People are Saying about it

“I’ve tried some of the firmer menstrual cups including the Diva Cup and Yuuki Cup, but just find that the Sckooncup is better. It’s soft comfortable, and flexible. One of the cons of a softer cup is that it can be a bit difficult to insert, but this hasn’t been my experience at all.”

“The Sckoon Cup is amazing! It’s the first cup I’ve tried, but I’ll be sticking with it for the rest of my life. I got the larger size because I’ve given birth vaginally and find that it works extremely well and doesn’t leak. I wish it had a slightly higher capacity, but that’s just about the only negative thing I can about it.”

#4: Mooncup

Next up on our list of the best mesntrual cups is the Moon Cup. It’s one of the first silicone menstrual cups. Since that time, it’s remained one of the most popular menstrual cups in the world.

It’s made in the UK and many people start with this one, and then end up sticking with it for the rest of their lives. It really is that good!

Size and Firmness: In the Middle

In terms of sizing and firmness, it falls right into the middle. This makes it a nice choice for beginners who are looking for a cup that isn’t too stiff, or too soft, and not too big or too small.

The other thing we love is that they have an excellent “buy direct” sales page. The price is very reasonable, and they offer free or cheap shipping to most countries around the world. This makes it an excellent choice for people who may not have easy access to an Amazon marketplace but are looking to buy a menstrual cup.

You can check out the MoonCup here:

What People are Saying about it:

“I LOVE the higher capacity of the Mooncup compared to the jumbo tampons I was previously using. I can actually sleep through the night of my heaviest flow—I just wear a pad in case of overflow and leaking and find that it works really well. It’s easy to insert and remove, and overall, it’s amazing!”

“I heard about menstrual cups from a zero-waste FB group and did a bunch of research on them. I ended up going with this one because it’s not coloured and seems to be the highest quality. I’ve very happy with it and have told a bunch of my friends now.”

“It’s kind of a life changer for that time of the month.”

“Their customer service is amazing, and they were able to answer my question easily and quickly.”

Next up on our list is the Oi Cup.

The Oi Menstrual Cup is a newcomer to the scene, and unlike the other cups on the list, this one is made from Thermoplastic Elastomer (The Meluna Cup, in an astounding number of sizes is another one made from this same material). However, unlike the Meluna Cup which is often hard to find, even online, the Oi Cup is more available.

You can learn more about that here: TPE vs Silicone Cups. This gives it the advantage of being softer and smoother to the touch, and it also has the ability to mold to your body when it heats up inside of you. This can make the Oi Cup very comfortable.

The company (Organic Initiative) behind the cup is based in New Zealand and makes a line of organic pads and tampons. We LOVE their products and also what their company is all about—providing healthier, safer period products alternatives.

Three Sizing Options

As far as their sanitary cup goes, there is one main reason why you might consider it over the others—the sizes. The Oi Cup comes in small, medium, and large.

The small cup is very, very small and one of the few menstrual cups that is made specifically for teens (Lily Cup One is another one). It’s small enough that it would be suitable for someone just starting out with menstruating. The diameter is only 35 ml, a full 5 mm smaller than something like the small Diva Cup. It’s also quite short, and may make a nice choice if you have a short vaginal canal, or low cervix.

The large Oi Menstrual Cup is quite large, and has a high capacity of 40 ml. This makes it one of the best choices for someone with a very heavy period. Compare this to a jumbo tampon at 10 ml and you’ll notice a huge difference. You might actually be able to make it through the night without having to get up to deal with your period!

The Oi Cup

What People are Saying about the Oi Cup

“I chose the Oi Cup over the others because the company is serious about the environment (Earth-friendly packaging) as well as making products that are safe from toxins and other bad stuff. I got the medium size cup and find that it works really well for me. I’m planning on buying the small for my daughter when she gets her first period.”

“I’ve used the Diva Cup before but found it a bit stiff and uncomfortable. I did some research and decided that one made from this material might work better for me. The Oi Menstrual Cups is amazing—it’s softer, and more pliable, exactly what I was looking for.”

“I find that wearing it all day, even on my heaviest flow is no problem. It is a bit of a challenge to not get blood everywhere when removing it, but I did eventually figure it out.”

All of the cups on this list so far are the reusable options. They are great for the environment, your health and will also save you lots of money. But, what about disposables—are there any options that you might want to consider? And what are the advantages and disadvantages of them? Read more!

Instead Soft Cup

The disposable menstrual cup that you might want to consider is the Soft Cup. Unlike the shape of regular cups, it’s a flat, flexible disc that fits right under your cervix. It can be used for 12 hours (all day, or all night), and then thrown in the trash. It’s designed as a single-use product, so please don’t reuse it.

The main advantage is that it can be used for penetrative sex during your period. However, it can get expensive for everyday use. And, you’ll also want to have fingers that are longer than average, or a lower cervix/short vaginal canal in order to insert, and remove it easily.

Read more here: Instead Softcup Review.

Where to Buy the SoftCup

You can sometimes find Softcups on the shelves at your local drugstore. However, it may not be easy! That’s why we recommend that you shop online at Amazon:

Why Consider Menstrual Cups?

There are a number of reasons why we recommend them, and why you might want to consider a menstrual cup instead of disposable products.

Better for your Health

Here’s something that many people don’t know. It’s that disposables like tampons and pads often contain toxic chemicals in them. And the bad news is that the walls of your vaginal are very thin and absorb just about anything.

By choosing a top-quality cup, you’re making a better choice for your health. It’s a small change that can make a big difference.

Better for the Environment

The average woman uses more than 10,000 tampons during her lifetime. Just say not this not eco-friendly option by choosing a handful of cups instead. The best ones can last for 5-10 years and you’ll be doing your part to reduce plastic waste and save the environment.

Save Money

Those thousands of tampons? They’re expensive! Most people find that period cups are around 10x cheaper than disposable products over the medium to long-term.

It’s an easy change that can result in a lot more money in the bank at the end of the month.

Make the switch today, and improve your vaginal health, save the environment and some money too.

Can’t Decide Between Them?

Okay, so you’re trying to decide between them, but it’s not that easy! There are so many brands, styles and sizes to choose from. Here’s some advice for making the best choice, or just head right over to our popular menstrual cup quiz. There are a few simple questions, and at the end, you’ll get our top recommendation for your body type and needs.

Choice of Materials

Most menstrual cups are made from medical-grade silicone. However, the Meluna Cup and Oi Cup are made from Thermoplastic Elastomer. Although TPE is slightly less durable (it loses it shape more quickly), it molds to your body and can be more comfortable.

Age

Many companies recommend their smaller size for younger people (25 or 30 is often the cut-off) and the larger sizes for older people. However, we don’t love this distinction and find the next factor much more important.

Vaginal Birth, or Not

Out of all the factors, this one is probably the most important. If you’re given birth vaginally, then consider using a larger cup (with a diameter of more than 44 mm). If you haven’t, choose a smaller one (with a diameter of less than 42 mm).

Cervix Height

This is another important consideration. Measure your cervix height. If you have a low cervix or short vagina, then consider a cup that is less than 60 mm. If you have a high cervix, then go for a cup longer than 70 mm. Finally, if you have an average length vagina, a cup between 65 and 70 mm should work well for you.

Flow

You can see some recommendations based on flow. However, we don’t really love this one. You may be a very small teenager who’s never had penetrative sex and end up with a larger cup that certainly won’t work for you. Or, someone who has given birth vaginally four times, but end up with a smaller cup.

Cheapies vs Expensive

Stick with the top menstrual cup brands instead of the cheap ones from China. They’re usually made from sub-par materials and are so flimsy that they don’t work that well. Any of the ones from this article are a good starting place.
